Gym observations
So I don’t think I’m a noob anymore. Not sure that 9 months of consistent gym-going and “Gainz” qualify me as a veteran, but I don’t think I’m a rookie at this point. So I thought I’d just post some of my observations to this point. Maybe this will help new fitblrs, or even those who may not be noobs, but are still struggling.
So here goes:
1. NOBODY cares what you are doing. I see a lot of concerns and questions about what other people at the gym will think of your form, your weights, your consistency, or your intensity and I’ve come to the conclusion that everybody else just ignores the people around them. We’re all so busy. With few exceptions, people don’t spend hours and hours in the gym. We have lives, we have things to do. Most people want to get in, get sweaty, and get gone. So if you’re worried about looking like a rookie, don’t sweat it. Look like a rookie. Everybody was a beginner at some point in their journey.
2. Wipe the equipment and re-rack the weights. Enough said.
3. Guys …. don’t be that dude. Don’t stare. Yes she looks good, yes she’s wearing tight clothes or whatever. But see point #1. She’s there to work out. So should you be.
4. You don’t need much to get started. I know that Planet Fitness sometimes gets some bad reviews from hard core lifters or bodybuilders, but for the most part you can get really fit and make some good progress there. I have the Black Card and that lets me use any PF, anywhere in the country. Considering how much I’m away from home, it is incredibly convenient to be able to pop in at a location in nearly any city I’m visiting. So don’t be afraid of joining a “starter gym” when you’re a beginner, then moving on to something a bit more specialized (be it a hardcore lifting gym, a CrossFit box, a SoulCycle, or whatever) once you’ve built a base level of fitness.
5. Have fun. Do whatever it is that you enjoy. I hate elliptical trainers. With a passion. So I never do them. My wife loves them (but then, she’s weird). I can take the treadmill from time-to-time, but I don’t love them. I mostly go to the gym to lift and get my cardio by running outside or riding my bike or playing tennis. But do what works for you.
6. It’s ok to take a day off. Or several days. Or a week. Just keep at it. Slowly things will pick up and you’ll get in the habit and make progress.
7. Find a diet/nutrition plan that works for you. I do a mild form of the keto diet. It’s worked for me so far. But if you’re vegetarian, vegan, low fat, or whatever …. find what works for you and (this is important) …. do the best you can. It’s ok to “slip up”, just keep at it. Little by little changes come.
8. Most of all, enjoy the journey.
